Purple alyssum flowers are made up of petite lavender to violet colored blooms. Each bloom consist of four petals and several slender stamens at its center. Purple alyssum flowers grow in clusters atop a thin, green stem. The flowers have a sweet aroma with a pungent, slightly bitter taste.
Alyssum can be used to accent desserts such as cakes, scones, sorbets, crème brulee, cookies, puddings, and tarts, or they can be lightly cooked into syrups, jams, and jellies.
